House of the Nobleman opened its 5th annual exhibition with a major display of Light Art in London’s Mayfair. Light Fantastic was a dazzling presentation of art works by leading artists of the genre as well as new work by some of today’s most exciting artists, including Troika, Random International, Yvette Mattern, Conrad Shawcross, Cerith Wyn Evans and Tim Noble, and Sue Webster.
Artists have always been fascinated by light: its nature, behavior and transformative qualities. But only in the last few decades, assisted by vast technological developments, has it become a medium for art. Capturing the tangible and sensory nature of this natural force, light technology has allowed for the creation of a new, dynamic genre of art that has the ability to challenge our perceptions, and stimulate wonder and serene contemplation.
The project also showcased a special endurance performance by Lia Chavez, ahead of her upcoming presentation at the Tate in late October, called Tumult: an 8 hour meditation performance that featured a new technological system that translated Lia’s brainwave oscillations into stroboscopic pulsations.
